James Brennan and his wife Maryellen have been living in Kilnacourt Wood, Portarlington, Co. Laois for the last 6 years. James, originally from Donegal and a retired Army man, could not believe the damage limescale build-up was causing to his kitchen appliances when he first arrived in Portarlington 6 years ago.

“Limescale would build-up all around the house”, said James. “The shower head, shower door, even the taps had a disgusting layer of scum on them from the continuous build-up of limescale“. The gas fitter told us that servicing our hot water boiler wouldn’t solve our constant breakdown problems because of the “kettling” (limescale build-up) on the heater element inside the water kettle. “I suppose it really came to head (pardon the pun) for me when, after dying my hair one evening, I went to rinse-out the dye and the shower nozzle just wouldn’t work…it was completely clogged with limescale!” Not long after that hair dying disaster, Maryellen had the EWT water softening system and drinking filter installed.

Thousands of people remain without drinking water in two areas in Dublin. Since last week residents in some areas of Clontarf have been asked to boil their drinking water and cooking water whilst further tests are carried.  Now an apparent separate issue of water contamination has been identified in parts of Coloock according to the Herald.

Dublin City Council report that tests have shown no presence of the harmful bacteria E-Coli however have identified larger than acceptable levels of total coliforms.  Water tankers have been deployed in the effected areas

Before the weather freezes, you should:

• Wrap all exposed pipes located outside or in un-heated areas of the home.

• Remove garden hoses from outside faucets.

• Cover vents around the foundation of your home.

• Turn off irrigation systems during the winter months to protect pipes and conserve water.

When the weather freezes:

• In unheated garages, shut off water to washing machines. Water softeners should be drained and protected from freezing temperatures.

• In sustained sub-freezing weather, let water drip slowly from inside faucets for a few minutes each hour.

• Take extra precautions to protect pipes that have frozen in the past.

Water Treatment Specialists EW Technologies cap fantastic year by winning coveted “Business of the Year Award” from ActionCOACH International.

EW Technologies, Ireland’s leading Water Softener Company were the proud winners of the “Business of the Year Award” at the ActionCoach International Awards held recently in the D4 Berkeley Hotel. Beating off stiff competition from over 200 applications the award capped a remarkable end to the most successful year in the company’s history.

Set up in 2002 EW Technologies has grown from a 2 man operation working out of a room in a Dublin to employing 24 staff,  and providing a further 8 new jobs in Ireland alone in 2011 in both its Blanchardstown and Galway offices. Oliver Ginty, Director of EW Technologies puts the company’s success down to the associates working in the company. “In 2009 a young man called Antanas Calnis called into our branch in Galway looking for a job” says Oliver.  Originally from Kanaus in Lithuania, Antanas had been working for 5 years in Ireland before been made redundant in 2008.  “We didn’t have any extra work at the time but the fact that Antanas was determined to get off social welfare really impressed us so a few months later when a vacancy arose we called him back and got him working with us.”

“Antanas showed such enthusiasm and interest in his work that in early 2011 after initial research into the Lithuanian market we decided to set up an office in Kaunas and export our water treatment equipment for the first time ever. We already had systems working well for us in Ireland; it was just a case of transferring these systems to Lithuania and having the right person in place to run it properly which was Antanas” says Oliver

6 months on and EWT Lithuanian have employed its second associate in Kaunas and doubled its customer base month on month.

“2011 has been a fantastic year for us”, says Oliver. “With the new systems, marketing and structures we’ve put in place were hoping to create at least 10 more jobs in Ireland next year and were really looking forward to 2012. ”.
